Riverhayes

We were appointed as the structural engineers for the construction design of this new contemporary house build consisting of four bedrooms and two storeys. The modern open plan layout of the building along with the broad glass windows makes it bright with natural light and with stunning views of the River Exe, but the living space maintains a very homely feel. The house was designed by Barc Architects – barcarchitects.com

The layout of the project led to some interesting detailing to fully incorporate all structural elements into the building envelope.

On the Ground floor, the front elevation of the property is mainly traditional masonry construction which gives way to the large open plan living spaces and extensive glazing to the rear. This was made possible by structural steelwork beams, discretely hidden columns and post locations. Corner lintels supplied continuous glazing around the reveals. Small internal and external retaining walls provide sunken areas to tie the property into the landscape. While recessed and cantilevered elements on the first floor provide relief between inside and outside spaces. The property utilises both pitched and flat roofs to good effect using canopies to help to shelter the balcony areas finished with seamless glass balustrading. Drainage was dealt with and discharged on site for both surface and foul water.

The property incorporated many structural design services we can provide; making use of masonry panels, retaining walls, timber studwork, lintels, floors and framing, steelwork framing elements, structural glass design, balustrading and drainage design for soakaways, drainage fields and treatment plants.

Providing all of these elements to the Architects design and workmanship resulted in a successful project with a great overall finish.
