The Team

Established in 1996, the consultancy continues to expand encompassing further expertise and fields of knowledge. We now have the benefit of seven Chartered Engineers, three experienced Design Engineers and two CAD technicians, plus secretarial and administrative support.

Simon Bastone


Qualifications: BSc (Hons), CEng, MICE, MIStructE - chartered in both Structural Engineering and Civil Engineering in 1988.

Simon qualified as a Chartered Civil and Structural Engineer in 1988, has over 20 years experience in Expert Witness work and over 30 years experience in structural and civil engineering design, reporting, surveys and project management. He has worked on a wide range of both major and minor projects. He also has considerable site experience and, as a result, has gained a practical outlook to projects, particularly from a construction and detailing viewpoint.

Since setting up the company, the aim has always been to maintain a high standard of service to Clients and to meet ever demanding timescales for work.

Tim Hunter

Chartered Engineer

Qualifications: BEng(Hons) CEng MIStructE.

Tim joined the practice in 2016 having 20 years of consultancy experience in the Midlands and South West. Tim achieved Chartered Structural Engineer status in 2000 and has a background in historic building repair, structural appraisal and alterations, telecoms structures and temporary works design. Tim is keen to promote sustainable and low energy construction and has worked on several Passivhaus projects. He has a particular interest in timber frame construction, both modern and traditional. Tim is experienced in the use of AutoCad, Excel and a wide range of analysis software for structural design.

Carl Vining

Project Coordinator and Senior Structural Engineer

Qualifications are BSc (Hons) CEng MIStructE.

Carl Joined the practice in 2018, having over 30 years’ experience in structural engineering. Carl achieved chartered status in 1988.

He has worked on a wide range of both major and minor projects, including multi-storey residential RC frames and steelwork office and industrial buildings.

Jonathan Legg

Chartered Engineer

Qualifications: MSc, BEng (Hons), CEng MICE

Jonathan joined the practice in 2019 having over 10 years’ experience in river engineering design and construction supervision on both small and large scale projects. Jonathan achieved Chartered Civil Engineer status in 2016 and has an extensive background in the design of flood defences and complex river structures including flood walls and embankments, flow control structures, fish passes, weirs and flood channels.

Jonathan also has design experience for both civil and structural engineering projects.

Jonathan has gained valuable construction knowledge from his considerable site experience which he incorporates into deigns to ensure safety, quality, and buildability.

Jonathan is experienced in design management of large scale projects to BIM (Building Information Modelling) Levels 1 and 2.

Jonathan Holtby

Design Engineer

Qualifications: BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering

Graduating and joining the company in 2006, Jon has gained extensive design experience on a wide range of projects and is a valuable asset to the company. Work undertaken includes foundations, piling, basement construction, steel, timber frame, masonry and reinforced concrete design. He is also an experienced detailer using AutoCad.

Recent projects include roads and drainage schemes, retaining walls, steel frame buildings, raft foundations, barn and loft conversions and many more.

Robert Thomson

Consultant Chartered Engineer

Qualifications: BSc, CEng, MIStructE

Chartered in 1995 and with a background of Investigation, design and supervision for numerous projects for Developers, Private Clients, Commercial, Leisure, Architects, Design and Build contracts, National Trust and other referrals, Robert has developed considerable experience to offer our Clients.

Recently, Robert has designed substantial temporary works, strengthening of a damaged listed Boatyard Quay, Stabilisation of dry stone masonry retaining wall, structural repairs to stone masonry buildings, Conversion of Hotel to 8 Flats, Piled reinforced concrete slab foundation and superstructure design.

Rupert Bollen

Design Engineer

Qualifications: MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering

Rupert graduated from the University of Nottingham with a Masters degree in Civil Engineering in 2014. During his time at University Rupert undertook many Eurocode design exercises and with a keen eye for detail became thoroughly conversant with AutoCAD. Rupert is very keen to learn the practical side of engineering through application and looks forward to attaining varied experience through the extensive expertise of the team. Rupert joined the practice at the beginning of 2015 and is enjoying a varied workload, enabling a wide range of experience to be established. Rupert’s duties include drawing work, preparation of structural design calculations, dealing with local authorities and party wall related works. Recent projects include loft conversions, interior alterations and structural inspections.

Peter Lambert

Consultant Chartered Engineer

Qualifications: CEng, MIStructE

Peter has worked with Simon Bastone Associates Ltd since 2007 on a wide range of interesting projects, delivering high quality design. He has gained considerable experience over the years, commencing work in the construction industry in 1964. Previous projects include extensive works to historic buildings where a sympathetic approach is necessary. This is of great benefit to our customers.

Jack Gou

Design Engineer - Graduate

Qualifications: MSc Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering, BEng Civil Engineering

Jack graduated from the University of Portsmouth with an MSc Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering (Merit) in 2016. Jack joined the practice in 2019 is an experienced civil and structural engineer with 3 years of project experience including structural design and analysis, SuDs design, FRAs. As well as software experience including Tekla Tedds, AutoCAD, MicroDrainage, Tekla Structural Designer, Civils 3D and Revit Structure.

Jack is an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual who has a clear understanding of the role and responsibilities associated with being a graduate engineer and beyond. Jack is able to establish, maintain and develop effective working relationships with clients, operational teams, contractors and colleagues. He has quickly developed a broad range of technical, personal effectiveness and leadership skills to tackle difficult problem.

Sheree Maria Hurford

Lead Administrator

Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts Business Enterprise with First Class Honours (1st), BTEC National Diploma in Business

Sheree graduated from the University of the West of England, Bristol with a First Class Honours (1st) degree in Business Enterprise in 2013. Her experience includes businesses management, business administration, accountancy, financial administration, and customer service. Sheree joined the company in early 2018 and has become an integral part of the team, while providing essential support to the engineers and ensuring the smooth running of the office.
