Brunel’s Atmospheric Railway Building

Type: Building Conservation Location: Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club, Starcross

Used by the Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club, the external walls of the building were suffering from serious erosion, particularly the elevation facing the highway. The Heavitree Stone sandstone blocks had eroded by up to 200mm, caused by chemical attack and weathering, exacerbated by the highway traffic.

The individual blocks were repaired in-situ by dubbing out with suitable breathable materials and tying everything together using stainless steel tie bars. The wall was then covered with stainless steel mesh and layers of render built up to original levels.

The works were praised by Conservation Officers.
