Combe Hill

Type: Reinstatement of Historic Fire Damaged Property Location: Combe Raleigh, Honiton, East Devon

Combe Hill is a substantial country estate and the main house was seriously damaged by fire. We were initially called to site by East Devon District Council as their appointment emergency call out engineers to assess damage to the property for health and safety reasons. We assisted the fire brigade on site in assessing the structure for safety for access by firemen.

This led to being appointed by the clients and insurers to provide full structural engineering services for reinstatement of the building. The work involved reconstruction of the historic roof structure, floors and substantial works to fire damaged walls, lintels and other parts of the structure.

It was important to carry out designs using traditional materials and methods of construction and to consider the historic architectural form of the building. We worked closely with the conservation officers.

We also carried out substantial works for the conversion and renovation of the coach house, which is located a short distance from the main building. The works were carried out to a very high standard.
